3 PhD positions at the University of Groningen
Description : The key feature of nanoporous metallic actuators is their nanostructural architecture, which links the overall behavior to the charge-induced surface stresses at the nanoscale. In this project we will synthesize novel nanoporous metals by exploiting the self-assembling properties of block copolymers, characterize their microstructure and test their functionality. Experimentally- calibrated numerical simulations will be performed to gain understanding on the role of the nanostructural topology and to supply guidance for new manufacturing procedures. We seek three PhD students to complete our team (also including diblock-copolymer synthesis): one PhD student to work on experimental characterization and testing (candidates should have a Masters degree in (applied) physics or materials science, contact Prof.dr.ir. J.Th.M. De Hosson j.t.m.de.hosson@rug.nl), one PhD student to work on finite element modeling (candidates with a Masters degree in (applied) physics or mechanical engineering, contact Prof.dr.ir. P.R. Onck, p.r.onck@rug. nl), and one PhD student to work on Monte Carlo simulation and a massively parallel solver for the IBM BlueGene/P (candidates with Master degree in theoretical physics/computer science contact Prof.dr.
