Nottingham Trent University is inviting applications for 12 fully-funded PhD studentships, commencing in October 2010. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (currently £13,290 per annum) for up to three years.

Applications are invited for the following projects within the School of Science and Technology:
-Novel Switching Mechanisms in Multistable Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays
-Dopant migration and aging processing in semiconductor lasers, heterostructures and nanostructures
-Novel therapeutic vectors towards the therapy of uveal melanoma
-Non-equilibrium behaviour in model soft materials
-Antibiotic resistance of Hospital and community acquired E.coli, mechanisms and associated virulence factors
-Liquid Origami: The Physics (and Chemistry) of Droplet Wrapping
-Population genetics to unravel the evolutionary history of the Yersinia enterocolitica complex
-Reduction of carbon footprint through optimum scheduling of power plants
-Stratification of cord blood stem cells
-Role of genetic variation in the alteration of bone metabolism and stress fracture injury

Entry requirement
A first class or upper second class U.K. BSc (Hons) degree (or equivalent) or Masters degree in a relevant field.

Award
The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (currently £13,290 per annum) for up to three years. Applications from overseas students are welcome, but a successful candidate would be responsible for paying the international fees. (Fees for 2009/10 are £10,200 for international students).

Eligibility
Applications can be accepted from UK/EU and also International students. The minimum English language proficiency requirement for candidates who have not undertaken a higher degree at a UK HE institution is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 560/iBT 83.

In 2008 "la Caixa" Foundation launched a scholarship programme to offer interdisciplinary training and research opportunities to outstanding young graduate students of any nationality to pursue a PhD project at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO).

The "la Caixa"/CNIO international PhD programme offers cross-disciplinary training in state-of-the- art basic and applied cancer research within an international scientific environment. Ten fully funded four year fellowships will be available in 2010. Candidates should have an excellent academic track record, a solid knowledge of English and previous research experience.

The symposium will be held at the college Thursday through Saturday, April 15-17, 2010.

This Research Fellow will be required to conduct experimental/ practical- oriented research on the ARC Linkage project and will contribute to infrastructure development for integration of renewable and distributed power generation to support electricity networks. Interested persons must possess a PhD in a relevant area of electrical engineering (or have submitted a thesis) preferably in electric power, and must have the ability to conduct experimental and laboratory based research in power engineering and have research capabilities in renewable energy technologies, including power system dynamics, stability and control. It is expected that interested persons will have a sound background on the application of power electronics in power systems.

TWO AUSTRALIAN POSTGRADUATE INDUSTRY AWARDS (PhD SCHOLARSHIPS) ON
RENEWABLE AND DISTRIBUTED POWER GENERATION (ARC LINKAGE PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG )

Two Australian Postgraduate Industry Awards (APAIs), each worth $26,669 per annum (tax free) for three-years, are available for postgraduate research towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Successful applicants will conduct research to contribute to infrastructure development for integration of renewable and distributed power generation into electricity grid systems. One APAI will conduct research on power quality aspects related to the integration of renewable and distributed power generation, and the other will carry out research on network control and protection issues associated with the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources. Candidates with undergraduate honours (Class I or II(1)) or Masters degrees by research in electrical engineering with power engineering major are invited to express their interest in applying for these awards.

The Sato International Scholarship Foundation grants two types of scholarship for self-supporting students from ASEAN countries as well as Southwest Asian countries enrolled in a Japanese undergraduate or graduate institution:

Amount of Scholarship

• Undergraduate students: 120,000 yen/month
• Graduate students: 180,000 yen/month( plus additional support to cover cost for attending conferences )

Duration of Scholarship: 2 years

Eligibility

The applicant must be a citizen from the aforesaid countries, who does not hold Japanese citizenship and must be enrolled in a Japanese undergraduate or graduate institution, under the jurisdiction of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The applicant must also fulfill the following requirements:

1. Does not receive any sort of scholarship or funding from other parties.
2. Holds legal residence status as a college student.
3. Have interest in promoting international understanding and friendship, and is able to attend SISF meetings (meetings are held 6 times/year).
4. Does not have a parent employed in Japan.
5. Does not hold a doctorate degree.
6. Is enrolled in a program with more than 1 year left until graduation/completion (from April 2009). This restriction does not apply to doctorate program.

Scholarship for Short-Term Exchange Students: This scholarship is provided to students who are recommended by those designated universities that have secured an agreement of recommendation with the Sato International Scholarship Foundation. Scholarship as well as travel fee to Japan is provided to those students from the aforesaid countries who will study in Japan on a short term based on the agreement among universities for study exchange.

Amount of Scholarship: 100,000 yen/month

Duration of Scholarship: Over 6 months, up to 10 months; however scholarship terminates upon completion of the program.

1) Role of benthic algae in coral reef recovery processes: Research will involve field and laboratory experiments with coral larvae to study the effects of benthic algae on coral early life stages, including larval behavior, larval settlement and survival, as well as field studies on benthic algal dynamics, and settlement and post-settlement mortality of corals. Outcomes will be incorporated within an ecological model developed by other FORCE partners. The research will involve interactions with field ecologists, marine botanists and ecosystem
modellers, and will be performed in close collaboration with the Marine Botany group at the University of Bremen (www.uni-bremen. de), the Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation CARMABI in Cura?ao (www.carmabi. org), and partners within the FORCE project.

2) Ecology of benthic cyanobacterial mats on coral reefs: Work will involve field surveys to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of benthic cyanobacterial blooms in relation to biotic and abiotic parameters in the environment, as well as field and laboratory experiments to investigate the controlling factors of these blooms. The study will involve a variety of experimental and state-of-the- art analytical techniques for community-, functional- and geochemical analyses. The work will be multidisciplinary, involving biology, microbiology and biogeochemistry. The research will be performed in close collaboration with the Microsensor Research group of the Max-Planck-Institut e for Marine Microbiology in Bremen (www.mpi-bremen. de), the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences MARUM (www.marum.de), the Marine Geology Department at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research in Texel (www.nioz.nl), and partners within the FORCE project.

The field location for both positions will be Cura?ao, Netherlands Antilles. Both appointments are for a 3 year period starting April 2010 (negotiable) .

Requirements: Applicants of any nationality are eligible to apply for these positions. Applicants should hold a Master or Diploma degree in marine biology (position 1) or in biology (position 2). Experience in coral reef ecology, marine botany and scientific diving will be important assets for position 1. A background in microbial ecology with an interest in biogeochemistry and experience in coral reef ecology are desirable for position 2. Diving certification and good skills in English are essential for both positions. The candidates should be prepared to make long-term stays on Cura?ao, and have good communication skills to integrate efficiently into an interdisciplinary research team.

The Special Youth Programme fellowship consists of an initial 4.5 months fellowship at UNFPA Headquarters, New York, followed by a continued fellowship of another 4.5 months in the UNFPA Office in the country of the fellow.UNFPA will recruit six young people to be Special Youth Fellows from 1 April – 31 December.

Objective
This programme is designed to give young people from developing countries opportunities to engage in policy development and programming; to help build the capacity of young people; and to sensitize both young people and UNFPA staff on partnering to address adolescent and youth issues.

During the course of the programme, fellows will:

• Attend and participate in UNFPA and UN events and meetings as appropriate
• Undertake research and writing assignments
• Contribute to ongoing projects and programmes
• Organize a final presentation to UNFPA HQ staff on their projects and fellowships in Headquarters
• Interact with the New York local youth community on at least one occasion
• Develop a relationship with the Regional and Country Office and provide updates on their activities during the HQ fellowship and provide updates to HQ during fellowship at Regional or Country Office

All selected candidates will be provided:

• Cost of return travel from country of origin
• Assistance with travel documents and visa requirements
• Health insurance – Housing arrangements
• Subsistence allowance (for meals and other basic needs)
• A workstation and internet access
• Opportunities to be mentored by UNFPA staff on issues of interest
• Administrative assistance as required

Qualifications and Experience
Criteria: Candidates must have some programme experience in areas of UNFPA’s mandate. These areas include: young people’s sexual and reproductive health, reproductive rights, humanitarian response, population, gender, culture, human rights, HIV prevention, poverty reduction, and sustainable livelihoods.

Eligibility

• Aged between 20-24 years old. Applicants born before 1 January 1987 will not be considered. No exceptions.
• Residence and nationality of a developing country. Applicants from developed countries will not be considered for this programme, but are invited to apply for UNFPA’s regular internship programme.
• Established interest and dedication to development issues through previous experiences or affiliation with a youth network or NGO working on development issues
• Basic leadership and advocacy skills
• Basic understanding of issues of importance to UNFPA and what the organization stands for – English language skills (written and oral)
• Commitment to return to home country to undertake follow up work with young people

DIW Berlin – Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research

The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduated students from all over the world to attend its structured doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.

Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics, business and administration or social sciences in order to apply. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil engineering or statistics) also fulfill the admission requirements of the program. Students with a degree in economics follow the economic track that leads to a PhD in economics; students with a degree in sociology follow a social science track which leads to a PhD in sociology. There is a number of core courses that both groups of students will attend.

The German Institute of Economic Research DIW Berlin is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We are an independent, non-profit institute involved in economic research, service and policy advice. We co-operate closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg and in international academic networks.

The goal of Graduate Center’s activities is to provide outstanding doctoral students with a research environment and a training structure that will develop their talents in an accordingly exemplary manner. It leads them to a deep understanding of economic and social processes and offers them the opportunity to apply their knowledge within the professional research environment of one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. The 3-year program follows a dual training approach. It offers

• high-level core and field courses in the first year
• one research internship in Berlin
• a three month stay in Washington DC including advanced courses by US-based scholars and research activities at international renowned think tanks
• on-the-job training within research projects of the DIW Berlin in the 2. and 3. year.

After successfully finishing the programme students have submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific journals. They will receive a certificate confirming participation together with a doctoral degree. The Graduate Center offers a scholarship of €1000 per month in the first year to each doctoral student admitted. After successful completion of the first year the doctoral students are assigned to the research departments of the Institute. Research positions are offered depending on the volume of research projects under work.

The Department of Management at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, has an opening for a PhD scholarship as of 1 March 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over the past few years, entrepreneurship has become an area of increased strategic interest and the entrepreneurship research group at The Department of Management therefore invites applicants for a position as PhD student. This particular position is within the area of entrepreneurship and regional development and is funded by the Regional Development Council.

The PhD student will be joining a dedicated and vibrant group of senior and junior researchers in entrepreneurship from both the business school and the university. S/he will be expected to partake in events arranged by the group and in writing of academic articles alone and with members of the group, and to communicate research results to the public. A successful international applicant is expected to acquire a basic working knowledge of Danish during the early period of the PhD position.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong interest and some prior knowledge in entrepreneurship theory. We value methodological plurality. Earlier experience with working in an academic environment from a position as research assistant will be preferable.
